Unlike many other organizations, Carrara’s mission statement is operationalized throughout all aspects of the organization. Carrara aims to “redefine the term ‘luxury’ when used in reference to a treatment program” by demonstrating that luxury and clinical excellence are not mutually exclusive.

 

Our purpose is to provide “world-class treatment in a five-star setting,” which will allow the elite to recover from addiction, burnout, and other mental health issues without sacrificing their style of life or dignity.

 

“The Love Call” Philosophy


The core philosophy of Carrara’s organizational culture is “The Love Call”. Unlike the punitive methods that have been employed historically in the field of addiction treatment, our methodology recognizes addiction as an adaptive response to traumatic and shameful experiences.

 We also understand that the treatment environment should be nurturing. By eliminating external friction and providing maximal comfort, we decrease defensive mechanisms and convert the experience of being treated for addiction into a privilege.

A Legacy of Excellence: The Carrara Story

Carrara was created because there was a gap between “hospital” (i.e. institutional) settings that do not offer a comfortable setting, and “retreats” (that offer a luxurious setting), but do not have clinical standards.

The Return of a Visionary

Carrara's history begins with the story of our founder, Richard Taite. Following Cliffside Malibu, which he built into one of the world's most well-known luxury drug and alcohol treatment centers, Taite noticed a decline in the quality of the rehab sector after a 5 year hiatus.

Seeing the rise of the fentanyl epidemic and seeing the erosion of true luxury care, Taite returned to the industry with a new goal; to build a facility that would combine the aggressive clinical treatments of a tier-one hospital with the comfort of a private estate.

A Strategic Reunion of Experts

Carrara did not start as a typical startup. Rather than spending time building a new team, Carrara began with instant operational maturity. We implemented a "strategic reunion", reuniting all or most of the top clinical directors, therapists, and operational managers from the past ventures of our founder. This reunification of human capital ensures that our clients will be able to immediately tap into a team with established chemistry and decades of shared experience from the first day.

The "One-of-One" Philosophy

We practice a "one-of-one" philosophy, a deliberate decision to reject the volume-based care model. By limiting our client census and keeping a high staff-to-client ratio, we eliminate the "warehousing" of patients, which is common in many standard treatment programs.

At Carrara, each patient receives individualized attention, and each therapy session is tailored specifically to the needs of that patient, in an atmosphere of complete confidentiality.

Executive Stewardship

  • Richard Taite, Executive Chairman – As Founder of Carrara and the innovator behind the “Love Call,” Richard is a national thought leader on addiction recovery and ensures that the foundation of all patient journeys remains grounded in empathetic and relentless care.
  • Candace Henderson, Chief Executive Officer – A distinguished leader in behavioral healthcare, Candace is known for scaling category-defining companies with rigorous operational discipline and clinical integrity. Prior to joining Carrara, she served as CEO of Monte Nido & Affiliates, where she led a successful national expansion and exit. Previously, as COO of American Addiction Centers, she guided the organization through its evolution into a publicly traded enterprise, following senior leadership roles at CRC Health Group.
  • Patricia Freebery, MA, LMFT, Executive Clinical Director – A practitioner of Emotion Focused Somatic Therapy for over 20 years in private practice in Los Angeles, Patricia is also a researcher in the biological implications of Core Trauma. She creates treatment models that combine Modern Neurobiology and Global Indigenous Spiritual Practices. Prior to joining Carrara, Patricia worked in senior-level positions at elite treatment centers such as Cliffside Malibu, and is currently developing treatment models that integrate Western Allopathic Medicine with Mindfulness to support clients in connecting with their authentic selves.
  • Daniel R. Christian, Chief Financial Officer – A high-energy financial strategist with over 15 years of leadership in the behavioral healthcare sector, Daniel specializes in complex organizational scaling and revenue cycle management. Prior to joining Carrara, he served as VP of Finance at Athena Care, guiding financial operations for a rapid-growth private equity platform. Previously, he held senior leadership roles at American Addiction Centers, where he was instrumental in facilitating its IPO.

Medical Directorship

  • Dr. Craig V. Smith, Medical Director – A UCLA and University of Pittsburgh-trained Organ Transplant Surgeon (having completed over 500 transplants), who has transitioned to Addiction Medicine after observing how substance abuse affects the body’s physiological functions. Dr. Smith brings a level of expertise to Carrara that no other facility can match, due to his surgical background, which allows him to safely treat medically complex cases.
  • Dr. Kenneth Spielvogel, Senior Medical Officer – Board-certified physician with nearly 30 years of experience providing individualized, compassionate patient care. Dr. Spielvogel focuses on developing long-lasting, supportive doctor/patient relationships so his patients have the resources they need to make informed decisions regarding their overall health, weight management, and lifestyle choices through all phases of recovery.

Specialized Clinical & Psychiatric Faculty

  • Dr. Ben Shapiro, Psychologist – Dr. Shapiro has a strong academic history coming out of Cornell and UCLA, where he was an Assistant Professor before joining Carrara Wellness Center. In addition to being a psychiatrist (board-certified) in psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine, Dr. Shapiro is also an expert in treating patients who have developed severe mental illness, eating disorders, or are struggling with trauma. Dr. Shapiro is now involved in the research of psychedelics at UCLA and has written several texts on integrated recovery.
  • Dr. Dana L. Harris, Psychiatrist – Dr. Harris is board-certified in adult psychiatry and addiction medicine and provides personalized, integrative mental health care. Dr. Harris sits on the Board of Directors of the California Society of Addiction Medicine and has worked extensively in UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute. Dr. Harris incorporates traditional psychiatric excellence with her fellowship-trained expertise in integrative medicine.
  • Britney Stearns, Program Director – Britney has been working in residential treatment settings for nearly ten years and believes in healing families damaged by addiction. Britney graduated from Pepperdine University and specializes in working with individuals who have co-occurring disorders, which include OCD, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Personality Disorders. As program director, Britney is responsible for developing the multi-modal programs available to clients of Carrara, providing them with access to a wide variety of coping strategies that can be used to support their recovery.
  • Nika Kalili, LMFT Psychotherapist –Nika has spent twenty years working in the field of mental health and substance abuse. Using psychodynamic theory, Nika addresses the underlying causes of addiction, including the patient’s attachment style and unconscious trauma. Nika works to build a foundation of trust and empathy with each client so they can work to dismantle their defenses and live the life they were meant to live.
