What Is Neurofeedback In Addiction Recovery?

Neurofeedback is brain training that uses real-time EEG readings to help a person shift their own brainwave patterns. In recovery it is used alongside counseling and medication, not in place of them. The goal is to steady the nervous system enough that cravings lose some of their grip and therapy has room to work.

How Neurofeedback Works

Sensors on the scalp record electrical activity in the brain. Software watches for the rhythm a clinician has set as the target, and when the brain produces it, a screen or a sound rewards the shift. Repeat that often enough and the brain begins to reach that state on its own. Most clinics start with a qEEG baseline, a map of an individual’s rhythms, and pick a protocol from there. Typical targets include easing excess frontal theta and lifting beta to support impulse control, or building alpha to settle hyperarousal. Some protocols aim at the reward and craving circuits covered in the neuroscience of compulsive use.

How Neurofeedback Is Delivered In Practice

A course opens with intake and a baseline reading, then settles into regular sessions, often two or three a week, lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Many clinicians ask for 20 to 40 sessions before judging results, and a single session commonly costs somewhere between $50 and $200. Progress is tracked with session data plus the person’s own reports on cravings, mood, and sleep.

What The Evidence Says About Neurofeedback For Addiction

Trials and reviews report encouraging signals for craving reduction and emotional regulation, especially in alcohol and opioid dependence. The research is uneven. Studies differ in protocol, session count, and outcome measures, and many are small. So clinicians treat neurofeedback as an add-on to evidence-based treatment, not a replacement. Risk is low. Sessions are non-invasive and drug-free, and side effects are usually mild and short-lived: a headache, tiredness, or brief irritability afterward. Serious events are rare. The harder limits are practical: uneven credentialing, inconsistent protocols, and patchy insurance coverage.
