The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) provides essential healthcare coverage for the spouses and dependent children of qualifying veterans. While it does not cover veterans themselves, CHAMPVA helps family members who have shared in the burdens of service to access medically necessary care—including substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.
This program makes it possible for dependents to receive detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient therapy, and mental health services through approved civilian providers. These services must be deemed clinically necessary and are typically subject to preauthorization.
CHAMPVA is designed for the spouses and dependent children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to service-connected conditions, or who died as a result of such conditions. Eligible individuals who are not covered under TRICARE can use CHAMPVA to access recovery-focused medical services through participating providers.
